Nadim Mehanna and his MotorShow team took the Deepal G318 for a comprehensive drive in the UAE.

The Deepal G318 is developed by Changan Automobile under its Deepal (Shenlan) brand, and it represents a clear shift toward rugged, adventure-focused electrified SUVs. Positioned as a range-extended off-road-oriented model, the G318 combines a traditional SUV silhouette with modern electric drive technology, aiming to deliver capability without relying solely on conventional combustion power.

From the outside, the G318 makes its intentions clear. The design is boxy, upright, and functional, with a strong emphasis on durability and presence. Its proportions are large and confident, supported by short overhangs and a high ground clearance that immediately suggest off-road readiness. The front end features a bold lighting signature and a closed-off grille design typical of range-extended EVs, giving it a modern identity while still maintaining a rugged character.

On the road, the G318 is powered by a range-extended electric system combining a petrol engine used as a generator with electric motors that drive the wheels. The system produces a combined output of approximately 430 hp and around 575 Nm of torque, depending on configuration. This setup allows the vehicle to behave like an electric SUV in most driving conditions, with instant torque and smooth acceleration, while the combustion engine primarily works to extend range when needed.

In everyday driving, the experience is quiet and refined. The electric motors handle most of the propulsion, making city driving smooth and responsive. Acceleration is strong and immediate, particularly in mid-range speeds, while the transition between electric and range-extending operation is seamless and largely imperceptible from the driver’s seat. The overall character is more controlled and effortless than aggressive, which suits its dual-purpose nature.

The battery system offers a pure electric driving range of around 150 to 180 kilometers, depending on driving conditions and specification. When combined with the range extender, total driving range can exceed 1,000 kilometers, making the G318 suitable for both daily commuting and long-distance travel without frequent refueling or charging concerns. This flexibility is one of its key strengths in real-world use.

The chassis is designed with a clear focus on mixed-use capability. While it does not use a traditional heavy-duty ladder-frame architecture, it benefits from reinforced structural design and an advanced suspension system tuned for both comfort and light off-road use. The ride quality is generally smooth, with good absorption of road imperfections, while maintaining enough control for uneven surfaces and rougher terrain.

Where the G318 becomes more interesting is in its off-road capability. It features an intelligent all-wheel-drive system, terrain driving modes, and electronic stability systems that adjust to different surfaces such as sand, gravel, and wet terrain. While it is not positioned as a hardcore rock crawler, it offers more capability than a typical urban SUV, making it suitable for light to moderate off-road conditions and outdoor exploration.

Inside, the G318 offers a modern and functional cabin with a strong emphasis on digital integration. A large central display dominates the dashboard, supported by a digital instrument cluster that provides clear and customizable driving information. The infotainment system is responsive and supports connectivity, navigation, and vehicle settings in a unified interface.

The interior design is practical and spacious, with a focus on usability rather than luxury excess. Materials are well-finished for the segment, and the layout is clean and easy to understand. Seating is comfortable with good support for longer journeys, while rear passengers benefit from generous space thanks to the vehicle’s overall proportions.

Technology plays a central role in the G318 experience, with a range of driver-assistance systems including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping support, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera system. These features work in the background to enhance safety and convenience without distracting from the driving experience.

In markets like the Middle East, where interest in both SUVs and new-energy vehicles is growing, the G318 offers a different approach by combining electrification with light off-road capability. It sits between a traditional SUV and a fully electric crossover, targeting drivers who want flexibility across different driving environments.

The Deepal G318 ultimately presents itself as a modern, versatile SUV that blends electric driving characteristics with practical range-extender technology and light off-road capability.

With over 400 hp, a dual-motor electric setup supported by a petrol generator, and a driving range that can exceed 1,000 kilometers, it offers a balanced solution for drivers seeking both efficiency and everyday usability without giving up SUV versatility.
