BYD, a manufacturer of new-energy vehicles, introduces the SHARK, its first pickup, bringing its plug-in Super Hybrid DMO technology to the growing European pickup market. The SHARK combines strong performance with improved efficiency over conventional diesel pickups, while offering an electric-only driving range of up to 90 km.

Designed for customers looking for a more efficient pickup, the SHARK can complete many everyday journeys on electric power while retaining the capability for work, leisure and longer-distance travel. Its double-cab layout provides seating for five, a spacious cabin and a range of BYD technologies. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality allows external devices to be powered through two onboard power outlets.

Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, said:

"We're pleased to introduce Super Hybrid technology to the pickup segment with the SHARK. DMO Super Hybrid technology combines electric driving capability with strong performance, off-road ability and long-distance flexibility. Features such as Vehicle-to-Load add further practicality for both work and leisure. As demand for plug-in hybrid pickups continues to grow, we believe the SHARK offers customers in Europe an efficient and versatile alternative."

RUGGED DESIGN INSPIRED BY THE SHARK

The SHARK's design draws inspiration from the shark, reflecting strength and agility. At the front, slim headlights positioned at the edges of the bonnet are linked by a full-width light signature, while the grille and lower bumper reference the shape of a shark's open mouth.

The side profile features a curved roofline and raised cabin, complemented by protective lower-body cladding, side steps and pronounced wheel arches housing 18-inch wheels. At the rear, a full-width light bar spans the tailgate, with vertically positioned tail lamps and an integrated BYD logo.

The SHARK has a wheelbase of 3,260 mm, while short overhangs contribute to approach and departure angles of 31° and 19.3° respectively.

Inside, the cabin combines practicality with comfort. Prominent grab handles support occupants when driving off-road, while heated and ventilated front sports seats, soft-touch materials, a column-mounted gear selector and large physical controls are designed for everyday usability.

The dashboard features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 15.6-inch rotating infotainment display. Rear passengers benefit from a flat floor, generous legroom and a 27° seat-back angle, creating a cabin that offers space comparable to many SUVs.

SUPER HYBRID DMO COMBINES PERFORMANCE WITH EFFICIENCY

The SHARK uses BYD's Super Hybrid DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) powertrain, featuring electric motors on both axles producing a combined output of 430 hp and 650 Nm of torque. This enables 0–100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

The system is designed to prioritise electric driving where possible. A longitudinally mounted 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine primarily generates electricity for the motors or the Blade Battery, while also contributing drive when appropriate. It produces 148 hp and 240 Nm.

The SHARK is built on a ladder-frame chassis engineered around the DMO powertrain. Its Blade Battery is integrated using Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) technology to improve structural rigidity and battery protection. More than 50% of the structure uses high-strength steel.

The 32.2 kWh Blade Battery provides an electric-only driving range of up to 90 km. Combined with a full fuel tank, the SHARK has a total driving range of up to 675 km, with a WLTP weighted fuel consumption of 3.5 L/100 km. Even with the battery at its minimum state of charge, fuel consumption remains at 9.6 L/100 km.

Charging from 15% to 100% takes just over three hours using an 11 kW AC charger, while 55 kW DC charging replenishes the battery from 30% to 80% in around 21 minutes.

The DMO system automatically manages four operating modes: EV, HEV Series, HEV Parallel and direct engine drive during higher-speed cruising, selecting the most appropriate mode according to driving conditions.

An intelligent all-wheel-drive system provides terrain modes for sand, mud, snow and gravel. Double-wishbone suspension is fitted front and rear, while Hill Descent Control comes as standard.

The SHARK offers a 2,500 kg towing capacity, a 790 kg payload and a 1,200-litre load bed, making it suitable for a wide range of work and lifestyle applications.

SINGLE HIGH-SPECIFICATION TRIM

The SHARK is offered in a single trim level with a comprehensive list of standard equipment. Interior features include vegan leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats and a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system.

Technology includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, head-up display, 15.6-inch infotainment screen with navigation, voice assistant, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, remote climate control via the BYD app, a 50 W wireless smartphone charger, keyless entry, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera and exterior puddle lights.

Vehicle-to-Load provides up to 6.6 kW of external power through the charging port or a dedicated socket in the load bed, enabling the use of tools and other electrical equipment.

Safety equipment includes Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Brake, Forward and Rear Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning with Emergency Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Hill Hold Control, seven airbags, ISOFIX child-seat mounting points, Child Presence Detection, a mechanical child lock and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

The SHARK is available in five exterior colours: Atlantis Blue, Obsidian Black, Polar White, Grey Green and Sunrise Orange. It is fitted with 18-inch black and silver alloy wheels as standard, while all-black 18-inch wheels are available as an option.
