Nadim Mehanna and his MotorShow team took the 2026 Mercedes-Benz G580 for a comprehensive drive in the UAE.

The Mercedes‑Benz G580 with EQ Technology represents a major evolution of the iconic Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class, bringing fully electric power to one of the most recognizable luxury SUVs in the world.

Developed by Mercedes‑Benz, the G580 is the first production electric version of the G-Class and introduces a new electric drivetrain while preserving the traditional design, off-road capability, and luxury features associated with the model.

The vehicle combines the rugged character of the classic G-Wagen with modern electric performance and advanced digital technology, positioning it as a high-end electric SUV suitable for markets such as the United Arab Emirates, where luxury off-road vehicles remain highly popular.

The exterior design of the G580 maintains the distinctive boxy silhouette that has defined the G-Class for decades. Its upright stance, flat body panels, exposed door hinges, and circular LED headlights preserve the visual identity that made the model famous. At the same time, the electric variant introduces subtle design changes that improve aerodynamics and cooling for the electric powertrain.

A redesigned front grille panel replaces the traditional radiator opening, while optimized airflow elements and underbody protection help improve efficiency and durability during off-road driving. Despite these updates, the vehicle remains instantly recognizable as a G-Class, combining classic styling with modern electric engineering.

Powering the G580 is a quad-motor electric drivetrain that uses four permanently excited synchronous motors—one for each wheel. Together, these motors produce a combined output of approximately 579 hp and about 1,164 Nm of torque, delivering strong acceleration and precise torque distribution across all four wheels. The system uses advanced electronic controls to manage power delivery, allowing the vehicle to maintain traction on a wide variety of surfaces, including sand, rocks, and steep terrain.

Each motor is paired with a two-speed transmission that enables both high-speed driving and low-range off-road capability, maintaining the traditional functionality expected from a G-Class.

Performance figures reflect the significant power available from the electric drivetrain. The G580 accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in approximately 4.6 to 4.7 seconds despite its large size and weight. This level of acceleration places the electric G-Class among the quicker luxury SUVs in its category.

The vehicle’s top speed is electronically limited to around 180 kilometers per hour, ensuring stable performance while maintaining efficiency for an electric powertrain. The instant torque delivery typical of electric motors also enhances the vehicle’s responsiveness when driving both on-road and off-road.

Energy for the electric motors is provided by a large 116-kWh lithium-ion battery integrated into the vehicle’s ladder-frame structure. This battery pack is protected by reinforced casing designed to withstand demanding off-road conditions. Depending on driving conditions and testing standards, the G580 can achieve an estimated driving range of approximately 470 kilometers on a full charge.

The vehicle supports fast-charging technology with a peak DC charging rate of up to 200 kW, allowing the battery to charge from around 10 percent to 80 percent in roughly 30 minutes when connected to a high-power charging station. Standard AC charging is also available for home or destination charging.

Beyond its electric powertrain, the G580 continues the G-Class tradition of strong off-road capability. The vehicle retains a ladder-frame chassis combined with independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle with adaptive damping. This configuration provides both durability and comfort across challenging terrain.

The electric drivetrain also enables unique off-road features that were not possible with conventional engines. Because each wheel has its own electric motor, the vehicle can precisely control torque at each corner, improving traction on uneven surfaces.

Some versions of the electric G-Class also include specialized driving functions such as the ability to rotate on the spot by spinning wheels in opposite directions, which can help maneuver in tight off-road environments.

The interior of the G580 combines modern digital technology with the luxury and craftsmanship expected from the G-Class lineup. The cabin maintains the traditional upright dashboard design while incorporating advanced displays and connectivity features.

A wide digital instrument cluster and central infotainment screen provide access to navigation, vehicle settings, and multimedia functions. The infotainment system integrates smartphone connectivity, voice control, and real-time vehicle information. Premium materials such as leather upholstery, aluminum trim, and optional carbon-fiber accents are used throughout the cabin, reflecting the vehicle’s luxury positioning.

Passenger comfort remains a key focus of the G-Class interior.

The vehicle offers seating for five passengers with generous headroom and legroom due to its tall body structure. Cargo capacity is also practical for a luxury SUV, with approximately 34.8 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats. Advanced climate control systems, premium sound systems, and multiple driver-assistance features further enhance the driving experience.

The G580 also incorporates modern safety and driver-assistance technologies designed to improve both convenience and safety during daily driving. These include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, collision-prevention systems, and advanced parking aids. The combination of these systems allows the vehicle to provide driver support while maintaining the commanding driving position and rugged character associated with the G-Class.

In the United Arab Emirates, the electric G-Class is positioned as a premium luxury SUV aimed at buyers seeking both off-road capability and advanced electric technology. The G-Class has long been a popular vehicle in the region due to its durability, prestige, and strong presence on the road. The introduction of the G580 expands the lineup by offering an electric alternative while maintaining the design and performance qualities that have made the model successful in the UAE market.

Overall, the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology represents a significant step in the electrification of the G-Class lineup. By combining a powerful quad-motor electric drivetrain, advanced battery technology, modern digital features, and the traditional off-road capabilities of the G-Class platform, the vehicle offers a new interpretation of the classic luxury SUV.
