Nadim Mehanna and his MotorShow team took the BYD Leopard 8 for a comprehensive drive in the UAE.

The Leopard 8 is part of BYD’s off-road-focused lineup under its premium sub-brand Fangchengbao, positioning itself as a large, rugged SUV that combines traditional 4x4 design principles with modern plug-in hybrid technology. It is built to deliver serious capability while also benefiting from the efficiency and flexibility of electrification, making it one of the more interesting new entries in the segment.

On the road, the Leopard 8 immediately feels substantial. It is built on a body-on-frame platform and powered by a plug-in hybrid system combining a turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors. The system produces a combined output of approximately 680 to 700 hp and over 760 Nm of torque, depending on configuration. This gives the vehicle strong acceleration for its size, with power delivered in a smooth and controlled way rather than aggressively.

Despite its performance figures, the Leopard 8 is not positioned as a performance SUV in the traditional sense. Instead, the hybrid system is tuned to prioritize balance and usability. In city driving, the vehicle can operate in electric-only mode for shorter distances, while the petrol engine engages seamlessly when additional power or longer range is required. This dual-character setup makes it adaptable to both daily commuting and longer journeys.

The chassis and off-road hardware are a key part of its identity. The Leopard 8 uses a ladder-frame construction with an advanced four-wheel-drive system, including low-range gearing and electronic locking differentials depending on specification. Ground clearance is around 220 mm, supported by strong approach and departure angles that allow it to handle uneven terrain with confidence. These characteristics place it firmly in the category of serious off-road SUVs rather than soft-road crossovers.

On rough terrain, the Leopard 8 feels stable and controlled. The suspension is tuned to manage both weight and articulation, allowing it to absorb uneven surfaces while maintaining traction. Multiple terrain modes adjust throttle response, drivetrain behavior, and stability systems, giving the driver more control in different environments such as sand, gravel, or steep inclines.

The electric side of the system also plays an important role in low-speed off-road situations. Instant torque from the electric motors provides precise control when navigating difficult terrain, especially at crawling speeds where smoothness matters more than power output. This is one of the areas where the hybrid system adds real functional value beyond efficiency alone.

Inside, the Leopard 8 offers a spacious and modern cabin with a focus on practicality and technology. The layout is dominated by large digital screens, including a central infotainment display and a fully digital instrument cluster. The system is responsive and supports connectivity features, navigation, and vehicle controls in a unified interface.

Material quality is solid and aligned with its positioning, offering a mix of durability and modern design elements. Seating is comfortable and supportive, with generous space across both front and rear rows. Depending on configuration, the vehicle can accommodate multiple passengers with a flexible layout suited for both family use and outdoor-oriented lifestyles.

Technology and safety systems are well integrated, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, a 360-degree camera system, and additional off-road-specific monitoring tools depending on trim. These systems support the driver without taking away from the hands-on nature of the vehicle, especially in off-road scenarios where driver control remains essential.

In markets like the Middle East, where off-road capability is a key part of SUV demand, the Leopard 8 stands out as a modern interpretation of the segment. It combines strong mechanical capability with hybrid efficiency, offering a different approach compared with traditional petrol-powered off-roaders.

The BYD Leopard 8 ultimately presents itself as a capable and well-engineered SUV that blends serious off-road hardware with modern electrified performance. With up to around 700 hp, ladder-frame construction, low-range gearing, and a plug-in hybrid system that allows both electric and long-distance driving, it delivers a balanced package that is both powerful and practical without losing its core off-road identity.
